Make the map part of playtime with the US Map Panel. The panel features a scaled map with Alaska and Hawaii represented at near accurate proportion. The map comes with a scale in miles and a compass. Each state is labeled with their abbreviated on or near the state. At the top of the map, three questions are written as prompts for children to recall knowledge that they might already have. While a child is unlikely to stand in front of the map and study it, just having it in the play area familiarizes them with it. Once a child has engaged basic recognition, higher learning can begin. Just by adding educational panels around the play area will set them up for better success in the future with maps, state names and abbreviations, and how a map works.
